Quemetco Subsidiary Honored by City of Indianapolis for its Dedication to Air Quality

April 25, 2013 – Indianapolis, IN – RSR Corporation is pleased to announce that its subsidiary, Quemetco, Inc., has been honored by the City of Indianapolis with an Indianapolis Sustainability Awardfor the company’s dedication to reducing emissions. The annual competition selected Quemetco in recognition of its adaptation and installation of Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) pollution control technology.

“Quemetco is honored to have been selected as this year’s sustainability award winner for air quality by the City of Indianapolis,” said Bob Finn, RSR’s President and CEO. “This award is a direct result of our hard working employees and our lasting commitment to the citizens and the environment of Indianapolis.”

The Indianapolis Sustainability Awards are an annual competition to recognize groups and businesses that inspire innovation, showcase tangible improvements, reward leadership and promote education around principles of sustainability. The awards are presented in five categories: land, air, energy, water, and reuse and recycle. The competition raises money to fund local initiatives designed to make Indianapolis one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest

“We have invested close to $40 million to install the WESP system at our facilities in Indianapolis and California and we have seen significant reductions in emissions at both plants, resulting in a cleaner environment and healthier communities,” added Finn. “We are excited to be at the forefront of making Indianapolis more environmentally friendly.”

WESP is a state-of-the-art air quality process for particulate removal that removes close to 90 percent of potentially dangerous chemicals from plant emissions. While the technology has been used in other industrial settings, RSR is the first and only company in America to modify the technology for secondary lead smelting.

Quemetco’s implementation of the WESP system at its Indianapolis facility was completed in 2012 after noting the excellent results from a previous installation at the company’s California location. Quemetco’s previous emissions, already well below state and federal environmental regulatory limits, were reduced to less than five pounds of lead per year. Emissions of arsenic were reduced by approximately 95 percent.  Following on this track record of success, RSR will soon be implementing WESP at is Middleton, NY facility.

“A ninety percent reduction in lead and other emissions is unique in our industry and we are proud to operate the only WESP systems found in America’s secondary lead smelters,” Finn continued.  “RSR has made a commitment to go beyond what is asked by regulators in order to push the envelope of technology and our industry further into a cleaner and more sustainable future.”
